Math- students can work on any incomplete pages in their Math Journal 2 workbooks.  In addition, we did not begin Unit 12 Summer- Math Unit 12 Family Letter, so students can work on these workbook pages as well as complete the homework assignments posted here Summer- Math Unit 12 Study Links.  Once students are finished students can work on the “anytime math” games Summer- Math End of the Year Family Letter.

Reading- students should read the books from the 5th grade booklist.  

Required reading:  SEEDFOLKS, Paul Fleischman 

Choose three or more of the following for accelerated reader:

The Phantom Tollbooth, Norton Juster, Hatchet, Gary Paulsen, Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli, or Where the Red Fern Grows, Wilson Rawls

After reading students complete the following writing activities. such as a 

• character analysis on a character from the book. Summer- Character Analysis Writing Outline  Summer- Character Analysis Example   Summer- Character Outline Web blank. 
• Students can also write about the problem in the story, describe how the character solved the probelm, and then the student can write how they would have solved the problem differently and why. 
• The students can also write a different ending to the story or write an epilogue (what will happen in the story after the ending of the story, 5 years or 10 years later).

Writing- the students have written numerous pieces this year. and should continue to practice over the summer Summer- Editing Checklist. 

• Students may keep a journal writing a personal narrative about a person, place or thing. 
• Students may also conduct research on a person they admire and  write a biography on that person that they have read about Biography Research Guidelines.  
• They may create their own folktales Summer- Folktale Outline   Summer- Folktale Elephant’s Child   Summer- Folktale Elephant’s Child Outline. 
• Or they may simply create their own creative stories Summer Story Genres   Summer- Story Plan Sheet   Summer- Story Checklist .
